We are proud to announce that on 1st July 2011, we reached our initial fundraising target of £40,000 and as a result, a research fellowship to help fight pancreatic cancer has been awarded in memory of mum.

The Fiorina Elliott Fellowship was awarded to Angelina Mouralidarane, a PhD student, before an audience of 50 staff and guests at the Royal Free Hospital.

We have been grateful to the Royal Free for all their help in trying to save mum’s life and all our work has been to help promote research into pancreatic cancer in mum’s memory. Among the projects supported by the fund is a study of a possible link between pancreatic cancer and obesity.

During the introduction to the award ceremony, Mr Fusai said: “After meeting Fiorina, I was inspired to set up a charity at the Royal Free for pancreatic cancer. I hope the work of the charity will continue for many years. As a first step, I’m delighted to launch today a research fellowship at the Royal Free and UCL into pancreatic cancer.

“The more we know about the disease, the more we hope that in the future we can develop treatments to help patients live longer and ultimately cure the disease.”

Angelina had an opportunity to address the staff and guests and said: “I’m delighted to be awarded this fellowship. By looking at possible links between obesity and pancreatic cancer, we hope to identify earlier markers for the disease, potential treatments, and reduce deaths. I am able to do this work with the kind donation of the Fiorina Elliott Fellowship.”
Although we have reached our first milestone, we are by no means ready to slow down our fundraising.

Marks & Spencer donate £5,000 to Fund 221

Thanks to the kind generosity of Marks & Spencer Cheshunt branch, where Fiorina worked for many years, the charity pot for Fund 221 was nicely topped up with £5000 to help reach the target of £45,000.

It was with great pleasure for Peter and Marianne Elliott to hand the cheque to the Royal Free Charity Team and even managed to get a picture of the proud moment with Christopher Burghes, Chief Executive.

Fund 221 continues to grow and the team behind ‘Fiorina’ persist in their goal to increase awareness of Fund 221 and to raise money to support the essential research into Pancreatic Cancer.

£1,417 raised at M&S show

A great evening was shared by all at Marks & Spencer at the fashion show dedicated to Fiorinas memory and to raise further funds for the Royal Free Charity – Fund 221. As well as organising the show, colleagues and friends of Fiorina provided a great display on the night strutting their stuff on the catwalk sporting the latest range of ladies fashion wear.

Family, friends and customers enjoyed the delights of wine, cake and strawberries provided by M&S whilst the show was taking place. As you can see, donations were healthy and we would like to thank everyone that was there and digged in to their pockets for Fund 221. As well as money collected on the evening, Fiorinas colleagues organised a staff raffle to add further money to Fund 221.

M&S to host fashion Show

Marks & Spencer, Brookfield Centre at Cheshunt will be holding a Fashion Show of its new Ladies wear range on Wednesday 23rd June, starting at 7.30pm. That evening, there will be collection boxes around the store and any money raised will be donated to Fund 221, the Royal Free Charity’s Pancreatic Cancer fund.

Fiorina was a much loved person inside and outside of work. She worked at the Brookfield Centre Marks & Spencer store for over 10 years where she made many friends both with the staff and the customers. Already we have felt this through the sympathy cards and messages received when Fiorina lost her life and we are still hearing of customers still visiting the store asking after Fiorina only to be told the sad news that Marks & Spencer and especially the Per Una department at the Brookfield Centre lost a popular member of their team.

Fiorina’s friends in the Per Una department have worked tirously to try to find ways to raise money for Fund 221 and the Fashion Show will be the start of many.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Marks & Spencer Plc and especially the hard work and influence of Elaine and Sandra.
